The Importance of Treating Indoor Pets for Fleas

Around this time of the year we get a lot of phone calls about flea infestations. Several of those complaints come from clients who only have indoor pets.  Although summer is gone, fleas unfortunately are not. Fleas can get into your house by hitching  a ride on you, or on other pets in your home that go outside. This is usually the case for how indoor pets get fleas-especially during this season when fleas are trying to get into warmer temperatures. In the area we live in, it is hard to say for sure if fleas really go dormant in the winter months due to lack of consistent temperatures. Treating your indoor pets (as well as any pets that go outside) year- round is extremely important because without treating your pets, fleas have a nice warm body to feed upon without any risk of dying. Not treating indoor pets essentially gives fleas an open door to live in your home and a host to feed upon during the chillier months. Once facing an infestation the cycle is very difficult to break and can take a minimum of 3 months to clear with flea treatments (Although the flea treatments are working it is possible to see new fleas emerging from nesting areas in the household). Treating your household is important when facing an infestation, and can also be costly, depending on how out of control the situation gets. All in all, it is best to treat your indoor pets year round to avoid facing an infestation and to keep your furry loved ones flea free!
